Preventive Maintenance as a Cost Savings Measure
For many mining and construction companies routine equipment preventive maintenance is an accepted necessary part of doing business. Preventive Maintenance is an economically sound measure that reduces the chance of on shift equipment failure. Preventive maintenance is not just changing oil and filters on a schedule dictated by the manufacturer specification.
While performing the scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, an in-depth inspection of the machine needs to be preformed and a list of potential parts and component failures documented and turned into the maintenance department. These inspection reports should be reviewed by maintenance department personnel, and be added to a backlog list of repairs to be performed on that machine. These repairs can be performed during scheduled down time for that machine. After failure repairs are almost always more expensive than before failure repairs. Before failure repairs can be classified as scheduled repairs, and can usually we worked around production. With after failure repairs you have the added repair cost plus the loss of production. Equipment and Maintenance are a large portion of any company budget, anything we can do to reduce maintenance cost will increase profitability.
